Transhimalaya (Gangdise Shan) and Friendship Highway

The road across the Transhimalaya is very impressive. High snow-capped mountains, grassland and big saline lakes. The road passes along one of the highest sweet water lakes, TakydCo (5170m). The lake was still frozen in early May.
From Raka, where the Transhimalaya road meets the 'Southern Route' from Lhasa to Kailash, we continued to Lhatse. Along the Yarlung Tsangpo River we continued on the Friendship Highway to Lhasa. This stretch was in complete contrast to the Transhimalaya, as it was more populated and at lower elevation below 4000m we experienced spring time.

Die Transhimalaya-Piste ist landschaftlich sehr eindrucksvoll: vergletscherte Berge, Grasland und grosse Salzseen. Entlang der Piste liegt auch einer der höchstgelegenen Süßwasserseen, der TakydCo (5170m). Der See war Anfang Mai noch zugefroren.
Von Raka, wo die Transhimalaya-Piste auf die 'Südroute' von Lhasa zum Kailash trifft, ging es weiter nach Lhatse. Entlang des Brahmaputra fuhren wir dann auf dem Friendship Highway nach Lhasa. Dieser Abschnitt stand im Kontrast zu der Transhimalaya-Überquerung, es war dicht besiedelt, und in Höhen unter 4000m sogar schon frühlingshaft warm.
